Project
Body Bank - Adding credit
Summary
BodyBank is a web-based app focused on "body economics," helping students learn to balance their daily stress and energy by assessing their adherence to 8 skills-based comprehensive health standards.
UX Designer
Role
I joined as a UX Designer (Visual Designer and UI Engineer) to build on existing work, enhancing features and improving user experiences. The first feature I tackled was “Adding STRESS credit,” a process that spanned 60 days from design to implementation.
Defining the Problem
The primary user persona was John/Jane, a middle or high school student who owns a smartphone and needs to understand and manage their stress and energy levels.
A core function of the app was to capture users' daily stress levels through a series of questions. However, engagement was low, leading to inaccurate data collection. I needed to find a way to encourage users to actively participate in this process.
Discovery
Existing Flow: To identify areas for improvement, I began with a UX audit of the current stress-tracking flow and design patterns.
Key Learnings:
-
Monotonic Design Patterns: There was no differentiation between the stress and energy tracking flows, making it feel like users were entering the same data twice.
-
Lack of Feedback Interaction: Users weren’t receiving immediate feedback after entering their stress data. For example, the home page didn’t update instantly, which created frustration and a lack of trust in the app.
-
No Task Completion Gratification: After users completed the stress entry, there was no sense of accomplishment or acknowledgment, which reduced motivation to engage regularly.
Sketching a Solution
Given the need for a quick turnaround, I collaborated closely with product management to design, implement, test, and iterate the solution using a selected user segment. We focused on making swift, effective changes that could be delivered and validated quickly.
Results
The redesigned feature led to a 35% increase in user adoption. The rapid design-iterate approach enabled us to deliver the improved feature quickly with limited resources. Additionally, the UX audit revealed areas in the app’s information architecture that required enhancement, leading to a series of planned design improvements in the backlog.
